How to Prepare Your Home for a Professional Cleaning: A Utah Homeowner's Guide

Fifteen minutes of prep before we arrive is the difference between a good clean and a great one. A short, practical checklist from a team that has cleaned 3,500+ homes across the Wasatch Front.

Bright Utah living room with clear countertops ready for a professional house cleaning

Booking your first professional house cleaner in Utah? Congratulations — you've just bought yourself back a weekend. Before the team arrives, most homeowners have the same question: how much of this do I need to do myself?

Short answer: almost none of it. You're paying us to do the cleaning. Longer answer: about fifteen minutes of very specific prep — not scrubbing, just clearing — will get you a noticeably deeper clean in the same appointment window. This is the same short list our schedulers give every new client across Salt Lake, Utah, and Wasatch counties.

What Utah Cleaners Actually Appreciate Before Arrival

None of these take more than a few minutes. Skip the ones that don't apply to your home.

  • Clear the flat surfaces. Kitchen counters, coffee tables, dressers, bathroom vanities. If we can wipe the surface without moving twelve things off it first, we can wipe more surfaces in the same visit.
  • Note where pets will be. A sticky note on the door of the room they're closed in works. Utah homes with dogs also benefit from a quick outdoor waste pickup so nothing gets tracked in.
  • Lock up valuables and prescription medications. Not because you distrust the team — our cleaners are background-checked and bonded — but because it removes an entire category of anxiety on both sides.
  • Confirm water access. If your outdoor spigot is turned off for the season, or your utility sink is under a laundry pile, we lose 20 minutes fighting for water. A one-line text ahead of the visit fixes it.
  • Share parking notes. Sugar House and the Avenues in Salt Lake City, downtown Provo, and older Park City neighborhoods have street parking that isn't obvious. If we know where to park, we start cleaning on the clock instead of hunting for a spot.
  • Leave one interior light on if you'll be out. Utah's summer sun can wash out shadowed corners; winter appointments are the opposite. A single overhead light is enough.

What NOT to Do Before the Cleaners Arrive

These are the mistakes new clients almost always make. All of them cost you money without getting you a better clean.

  • Do not pre-clean. Wiping down the counters, spot-mopping the kitchen floor, running the vacuum — you're paying our team's hourly rate for those exact tasks. Save the effort.
  • Do not deep-scrub anything out of embarrassment. We have seen every version of a lived-in home. First deep cleans exist precisely because a home has fallen behind. That's the whole product.
  • Do not stage new supplies on every counter. We bring our own non-toxic, plant-based cleaners, microfibers, HEPA vacuum, and Utah-hard-water-appropriate descalers. If there's a specific product you want us to use on a specific surface, one sticky note is enough.
  • Do not run the dishwasher, laundry, or Roomba during the visit. Competing water and noise slow the team down. If you must run a load, please start it after we leave.
  • Do not skip mentioning a broken item. A wobbly toilet, a cracked shower door, a loose cabinet handle — we work around anything you flag; we might make it worse if we don't know.

The 15-Minute Pre-Cleaner Checklist

Print this, or run it in your head on the way out the door. This is the whole thing.

  1. Wipe major dishes into the sink or dishwasher (2 min)
  2. Clear kitchen and bathroom counters into drawers or baskets (4 min)
  3. Pick up loose laundry — floor, bed, chair — into hampers (3 min)
  4. Corral toys and shoes into their usual bin or closet (2 min)
  5. Confirm pet location, water access, and parking with a quick text (2 min)
  6. Unlock the door or set the garage code, and leave (2 min)

That's it. Fifteen minutes of clearing lets our team put those same minutes back into actual cleaning: grout, baseboards, cabinet fronts, window sills — the detail work that makes a professional visit visibly different from a household clean.

Utah-Specific Prep Notes

Our climate and geography add a few wrinkles you won't see in a national blog post.

  • Spring and summer allergens. Wasatch Front pollen counts spike from April through August. If anyone in the home has seasonal allergies, close the windows the morning of the clean — we can only remove the dust we can catch, and open windows during service means we're chasing new arrivals.
  • Mud room and entry. Utah trails, red-dirt southern Utah trips, and winter salt-and-slush all end up on entry-mat surfaces. Shake out entry mats onto the porch before we arrive; we'll do the deeper vacuum and wipe.
  • South- and west-facing windows. High-altitude UV bakes on dust and pet-nose smudges faster than most homeowners realize. If you want interior window cleaning added to a visit, mention it at booking — it's not part of a standard recurring clean.
  • Hard water spots. Salt Lake tap water runs 16–18 grains of hardness. On shower glass, faucets, and dishwasher exteriors, don't try to pre-scrub — you'll etch the surface. We use a citric-acid-based descaler that lifts the buildup without damage.
  • Wildfire smoke days. During inversion or wildfire smoke events, keep windows closed for 24 hours before the visit. We'll HEPA-vacuum airborne particulate that has settled indoors, but only if it hasn't been re-agitated.

First-Time Deep Clean vs. Recurring Clean: Prep Is Slightly Different

For a first-time deep clean, plan for a longer appointment (usually 4–6 hours for a 3-bedroom Utah home) and add one extra prep step: walk the home with our lead cleaner for 5 minutes at the start so we can note priorities together. Kitchen deep-cleans, baseboards, and shower descaling are almost always the top three.

For a recurring clean (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly), skip the walkthrough. Your team already knows the home. Just do the 15-minute clear and go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I clean before the cleaners come?

No. You're paying us to clean. A quick 15-minute tidy so surfaces are clear speeds our team up and lets us give you deeper detail work in the same visit, but scrubbing before we arrive is wasted effort.

What should I do with my pets during a house cleaning?

Give your cleaner a quick note on where each pet will be. Most Utah clients close dogs in a bedroom or crate for the duration, and cats usually self-select a quiet closet. Please pick up outdoor pet waste before we arrive so it doesn't get tracked through the home.

How long does a professional house cleaning take in Utah?

A recurring 3-bedroom clean typically runs 2–3 hours with a two-person team. First-time deep cleans run 4–6 hours because we address dust and hard-water buildup accumulated since the last full clean.

Do I need to be home during the cleaning?

No. Most Wasatch Front clients leave a garage code, lockbox, or hidden key and are gone during the appointment. If it's your first visit with us, being home for the walkthrough is helpful but not required.

What supplies should I have on hand?

None. We bring everything: non-toxic, plant-based cleaners, microfiber cloths, HEPA vacuums, and mop systems. If you prefer we use a specific product on a specific surface, leave it on the counter with a sticky note.

How much notice do you need before the cleaning?

For a first-time booking we recommend at least 3 days' notice in summer. Recurring clients keep the same time slot each visit, so no pre-cleaning notice is needed.
